About John Hardy

October 10, 2017

WHO WE ARE:

Inspired by Bali and its time-honored jewelry-making traditions, Canadian artist John Hardy established an artisan collective in 1975 dedicated to creating one-of-a-kind jewelry and preserving the rich heritage of Bali. For over 40 years our artisans have committed to making handcrafted jewelry with techniques passed down for generations, using vetted suppliers to ensure both diamonds and gemstones conform to our high ethical standards, as well as reclaimed silver and gold. Our passion for creating distinctive and meaningful jewelry is echoed by our dedication to building a sustainable future for our artisan community.

WHAT WE CRAFT:

We craft our jewelry by hand, one piece at a time, through a unique 8-step process starting with a hand-sketched and watercolor design, followed by a wax carving and master casting of the piece, and ending with the hand-setting of each gemstone. We are known for bold designs and meticulous attention to details, seen in our iconic Classic Chain bracelet, which takes one artisan four days to weave by hand. Over the years, we’ve stayed true to the authentic jewelry-making techniques of the Balinese royal courts— chain-weaving, hand-hammering precious metals, carving intricate back-grille scenes inspired by nature, and the textured jawan motif, traditionally found in the decoration of sacred objects. Each one-of-a-kind piece is imbued with meaning through powerful design and dramatic details.

WHAT WE STAND FOR:

We are committed to nurturing both our community and artisans, with our Ubud Design Studio and Workshop serving as a central hub. We support artisans—women, men, and whole families—through our “Jobs For Life” program, which ensures the unique jewelry making tradition is passed on for generations and apprentices will one day become masters. John Hardy is dedicated to sustainable luxury business practices. We strive to use 100% reclaimed Silver and Gold in the creation of our jewelry. Our Diamonds are sourced strictly following the United Nations resolution and the Kimberley Process. Our Gemstones and other Natural Materials are sourced following John Hardy’s Ethical Sourcing Code of Conduct. We are committed to our work preserving the natural landscape of Bali.

WEAR BAMBOO, PLANT BAMBOO:

We are committed to preserving the natural beauty of Bali. For every purchase from the Bamboo Collection, we plant a number of seedlings in Indonesia to offset our carbon footprint. In addition, we provide the local communities with training on the benefits of growing bamboo and correct bamboo forestry. John Hardy has also partnered with nonprofit 1,000 Bamboo Villages to further ensure that these communities are able to build a sustainable, profitable future through bamboo cultivation and harvesting. Since 2007, over one million seedlings have been planted as a result of sales from the Bamboo Collection, enough to cover New York City’s Central Park six times over. You’ll find the number of seedlings planted on your behalf engraved on the inside of each piece, as a heartening reminder of your beneficial impact. Simply put: when you wear Bamboo, you plant bamboo.
